Kevin Westenberg

One of my favourites. He is an American photographer,  renowned for his provocative, electrifying images of world-class musicians. His intense use of light, color and composition produces succulent, visual magic. This electricity, however, has its origin in Kevin’s lifelong romance with the adventure of rock and roll.

In the UK, his first published pieces in The NME (1984) shaped and secured a photographic future in the music and entertainment world. His musical heritage included memorable portraits of:  Jane’s Addiction, Pixies, Bjork,  PJ Harvey, Massive Attack,  The Rolling Stones, Marilyn Manson, Chemical Brothers, Richard Ashcroft, Doves, U2, Radiohead, Bon Jovi and Coldplay.

Kevin has also recently begun working with creatives from the performing arts: David Lynch, Luc Besson, The Coen Brothers, Billy Bob Thornton, Sean Penn, Jean Luc Godard, Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman, Tom Stoppard and Alan Rickman. Kevin’s images range from stunning to rebellious. But most critically, they capture the romance and beauty of our collective human adventure.

Don’t know much about her, I think she’s from London. First noticed her photos when I googled Patrick Wolf, and what a surprise. One of the first pics I saw taken by her was with a Holga, so I immediately loved her,  and her blog is quite interesting  as well http://rebeccatakespictures.blogspot.com. There’s a little about everything there, so you should check it out.

First pic I saw:

The British actress stars in Pringle’s Spring/Summer 2010 campaign as photographed by Ryan McGinley. Beautifully captured in the rugged terrain of Scotland’s highlands, McGinley also shot the Academy Award winner for a short film. “Pringle’s my mother’s milk. It’s what we grow up with,” she said.

Breathlessly travelling through the wildlife of Scotland, a dark forest framed by a bleak sky and rustling meadows, the Scottish filmmaker and photographer McGinley shoots a quiet and moving short film, highlighting Scottish heritage moving between the open moors to the dark caves and cobbled ruins surrounding the ethereal beauty of the androgynous Academy Award winning actress Swinton. McGinley artistic direction portrays Pringle’s loyalty to its Scottish roots as a brand and quirky creativity in its new collection on the most fitting of subjects.

Both the film, and pictures can be seen here:  www.pringlescotland.com

Hal Sear is a 24-year-old Royal College Of Art Graduate whose large-scale photographic portraits explore concepts of personal identity within the confines of hauntingly atmospheric scenarios. Referencing themes from film and popular culture his work plays on the human desire for otherness, creating scenes where the self is replaced with an illusive, beautiful, yet fictional screen character.

Q&A

What’s…

…your work all about?
It’s about creating something I want but can’t have.

…the most important thing an artist should remember?
If there is something wrong with you, then take it out on someone else!
